Come experience art and celebrate the rich marine ecology around the Cement Ship at Aptos on SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 2019. The beloved SS Palo Alto will turn 100 years old this year and artists from UCSC's Environmental Art class with Barbara Benish will exhibit works that celebrate and elaborate important issues surrounding our oceans.

State Parks has a fabulous birthday party planned for the Ship, with games, food, and of course, ART!

Since 2009 artist Barbara Benish has been working with students, community members, schools and the Social Public Arts Research Center at UCSC to promote ocean health and awareness via the arts. At the site of the ship, we create an aesthetically enhanced public space on the central coast of California designed to engage transformative education, inspire environmental awareness and promote ocean sustainability.

"The S.S. Palo Alto Project proposes to aesthetically frame a derelict military ship now sinking into the Pacific Ocean, engaging students in transformative education and research, inspiring environmental awareness in the public, and promoting ocean sustainability through the arts."
