VIRTUAL SENIOR SHOW: Cynthia Smith
Artist Statement: My interest in realism art stems from a desire to experience reality as vividly as possible. Being from San Diego, I have always been enchanted by and had many dreams about water. In order to enhance these dreams, I paint because it helps me look closer. When I swim at the beach, walk across a lake, or do my dishes at home, I want to soak in every detail.
Title: Windansea
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2019
Description: This ocean painting is from San Diego, and it was the first painting of water that I was really proud of. My goal was to emphasize the contrast between the dark shadows of the waves and the light bubbles floating on top.
Title: Escalante 1
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2019
Description: This painting is based on a photo I took in Escalante, Utah after splashing the water with my hand. I was fascinated by the way this bended the reflections and made everything look like it was melting.
Title: Escalante 2
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2019
Description: This is another painting from Escalante, Utah. I loved the way the rocks cast large and dark shadows over most of the water, while leaving a small sliver reflection of the sky.
Title: Seabright 1
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2020
Description: This seascape is from Santa Cruz. I wanted to focus on the way the waves interact with the rocks, causing large splashes and small pools of water.
Title: Seabright 2
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2020
Description: This is a close-up of the previous scene. I felt like this splash was deserving of its own painting because of its subtle color changes.
Title: Hume Lake
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2020
Description: This is a painting of Hume Lake, Sequoia National Forest. I loved the way the water sparkled in contrast to the dry land around it.
Title: Kitchen Sink
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Year: 2019
Description: This is a painting of my kitchen sink with dishes soaking in it. My favorite detail in the painting is the bubbles because they remind me of the ocean, bringing the most magical part of nature into the most mundane part of the indoors.
