Like a waking dream, the metamorphosis of stoic forms play out before one's eyes. Intricate origami tessellation floats slowly shift through space as they delicately hang from thin metal waves. These variegated hallucinations play with our perception by engaging with our senses in order to evoke the physicality and ephemerality of experience.
Paraboloidal forms simulate an expression of time as they transform our memories into a state of flux within our minds and our bodies. The process of this transformation is immense; beginning with a small seed, growing into a tree, milled into paper, and then folded with straight lines into undulating forms. The entropic works slowly float through space; shifting as the air changes with the presence of the viewer.
Created in an Americanized scale, the size invites one to feel small, recalling childhood. The translucent qualities of the paper allow for light to play on the many facets, creating a morphing quality that recalls James Turrell’s light installations. Such visual fallacies range from starkly contrasted angles to an erasure of depth altogether. Synthesized tones and distilled herbs fill the air with the scent of fleeting nostalgia. Music and essential oils are created in collaboration with botanicals. A curated blend of rosemary, camphor, frankincense, spearmint, and lemongrass are emitted into the air. This too is evocative of the transformation and refinement of natural materials; cultivating growth for the purpose of creating transcendent memories.
Traditional technique meets contemporary practice to express the ways in which small gestures contain the potential to create immense change. Each of these folds is meant to show the power and potential of persistence. This process based art creation is meant to inspire others to create and collaborate. That art, community and creation don’t require immense means. That one must simply begin and commit in order to implement metamorphoses.
