Anya Lehman

Anya Lehman
“Pumpkin Patch”
Digital Drawing.
Linework and fluidity are the stand-out features of this work. Through technique progression in Special Topics Drawing, I have been able to utilize linework to capture gesture.

Anya Lehman 2

Anya Lehman
“Mary Lou!”
Digital Drawing.
The main intentions of this piece were to incorporate both linework and blending techniques. Aiming to create a hodgepodge of texture and feel allows this piece to be tangible while remaining very much so digital.

Anya Lehman

Anya Lehman
“Purple Rum”
Digital Drawing.
This piece is purposefully unfinished in order to evoke the feeling of having a memory, where faces are almost impossible to imagine. Color pallet choice was intentional in conveying a colder and more ghostly feeling.

Akane Kaneko

Akane Kaneko 1

Akane Kaneko
“Raise”
Digital drawing on Photoshop
Focused on light and shadow by only using monochromatic colors to express her powerfulness and mysterious beauty.

Akane Kaneko 2

Akane Kaneko
“Naughty”
Digital drawing on Photoshop
Expressed the pop sense of feeling, cuteness, and whims of the cat while using a lot of colors to create an unrealistic, comic-like painting.

Bailey Jones

I am a printer, illustrator, and mixed media artist based in Santa Cruz, California. Those I love are often my inspiration. I believe art is a way of expressing tenderness between the artist and the viewer by taking time to understand and consider each other. My goal through this class was to better my lines and create looser, more energetic drawings.

Bailey Jones 1

“Falling Asleep at the Portrait”
Procreate Illustration.
In this sketching session I was attempting to create more weight and loose lines in the character. The background is an image of Rome and the character is falling asleep while getting her portrait painted.

Bailey Jones 2

“Spirit Dance”
Procreate Illustration.
During this session was to focus on the face and express mood. This piece is supposed to communicate the idea of musicians and other artists undervaluing their work due to lack of demand.

“Little Star”
Procreate Animation
During this session we read a story while sketching the model. This inspired me to reinvent a children's song using my sketches made during the warm ups. This was also an experiment into more abstract character design.

Benjamin Izenberg

Benjamin Izenberg
“Bad Cat”
Pen on paper, Digital Drawing
*This drawing is an accumulation of the skills I learned in this class. With a successful attempt at coloring. The goal was to create a character that would be reusable.

Chunlu Zhang

Chunlu Zhang 1

Chunlu Zhang
“Free!”
Digital Drawing.
This is my first drawing in this class. It is a quick drawing, I remembered in the first drawing class, Professor Rose said that do not think about it and just move your hand, it is totally ok to look ugly. It gives me a sense of how gesture drawing works.

Chunlu Zhang 2

Chunlu Zhang
“Wooolala”
Digital Drawing
This is a drawing in week 5, halfway of the course. We took advantage of digital tools and used our imagination to have fun. It was my first time combining my drawing with pictures. It focuses on the combination of your drawing with background.

Chunlu Zhang 3

Chunlu Zhang
“NOOM”
Digital Drawing
This is a drawing in week 10. I think I improve a lot. I am more familiar with digital tools and have a better understanding of gesture drawing. For this drawing, I focused more on the detail and I think I did it well.

Emily Tse

Emily Tse 1

Emily Tse
“Steampunk Shoot Out”
Digital
“This piece establishes a dramatic scene, spotlighting the main character in a dark, sepia-toned background. The smoking gun is evident of a recent event which forces viewers to imagine what happened before this scene. Did someone get shot? Was there a fight? This piece allows the audience to wonder and imagine their own narratives.”

Emily Tse 2

Emily Tse
“greco Roman aesthetics”
Digital
“This piece combines classical and modern media styles by incorporating text and abstract shapes into the image of a reclining muse. I used the lasso tool to create the sleek shapes and included the text on the bottom right corner similar to magazine covers. It imitates tabloid aesthetics while maintaining modernity.”

Emily Tse 3

Emily Tse
“Idle Neko”
Digital
“This piece experiments with neutral, earthy tones to establish a calm atmosphere. The pinks and greens are subtle and meld together without any striking shape or form, creating overall balance.”

Joyce Chen

Joyce Chen 1

Joyce Chen
“Spanish Rose”
Digital art
This drawing is drawn from a model, colored from imagination (including the facial shadows), and put in front of a picture inspired by blue.

Joyce Chen 2

Joyce Chen

Joyce Chen 4

Joyce Chen
“Opposing forces”

I used cross contouring, which are lines that go in a direction of action, for the left figure; the right is evil whilst the left is a farmer girl.

Lauren Baldock-Wood 2

Lauren Baldock-Wood
“Chopping Garlic”
Digital Drawing
This digital drawing of my friend chopping garlic is a study on light and memory. To make this drawing, I used techniques learned in this class, such as use of a large brush size and attempting not to lift my brush from the Wacom tablet.

Lauren Baldock-Wood

Lauren Baldock-Wood
“Zest”
Digital Drawing
This digital drawing seeks to capture the energy and movement of the life model as she continuously changed her pose in real-time.

Lee-Anna Meza

Lee-Anna Meza 1

Lee-Anna Meza
“Cowgirl contour”
Digital
This drawing is a 10 or 15 minute contour drawing of a class model who was dressed as a farmer/cowgirl. With it being a contour drawing I tried to focus on the outline of the model rather than include shading.

Lee-Anna Meza 2

Lee-Anna Meza
“Pink farm”
Digital
This drawing was done in about 20 minutes so it includes more detail and shading. After the model session I went into the drawing and colored her in a monochrome pink to create more of a pop art design. I also chose to add a more graphic background to incorporate more pop art style and add the purple/blue color to help the pink stand out more.

Lee-Anna Meza 3

Lee-Anna Meza
“Doghead”
Digital
This drawing was done in a subtractive process. My goal was to create a graphic style piece that showed depth even with the lack of shading. The drastic opposites of black and white was used to bring focus on the figure and bring it forward.

Lee-Anna Meza 4

Lee-Anna Meza
“Doghead 2”
Using a subtractive method the model is surrounded by a solid pink background. The solid background was meant to give this model pose a soft yet sharp look by using a hot pink. Keeping the details of the model very minimal to create more of a graphic/color blocking style.

Lizbeth LB

Lizbeth LB 1

Lizbeth L.B.
“Beautiful Slug”
12.16.2020 GIF through photoshop
I tried to illustrate the evolution of the figure and my concepts through a skill I learned in this class, motion. As someone who loves to play with color and opacity I felt that the last two images captured my interest artistically as well as my intrigue in fantasy.

Lizbeth LB 2

Lizbeth L.B.
“Erased”
12.16.2020 GIF through photoshop
I was inspired by the idea that historically there have been many great battles and events even those that have been horrific. Documentation on these events have been eroded by nature and even fabricated or destroyed by others. In the end time passes.

Lizbeth LB 3

Lizbeth L.B.
“This Is NOT Okay”
11.7.2020 Digital
My anger and frustration that I feel for people who want to regulate women's bodies with the excuse of being pro life.

Lizbeth LB 4

Lizbeth L.B.
“Hm”
10.6.2020 Digital drawing
I enjoyed the gender neutrality of this figure.

“Her Last Song”
This piece incorporates the use of previous sketches to create more dynamism throughout the subject. This is also an exploration of light- using the imagination to depict what her performance would look like.

Nicole Soriano 4

Nicole Soriano
“xyz”
While hollow, the subject hopes to materialize the space in which it occupies through the use of cross-contour techniques. Lines represent a series of planes, creating a 3 dimensional effect.

Ria Devine

Vanessa Shalaby

Vanessa Shalaby 1

Vanessa Shalaby
“It”
Digital painting in Adobe Photoshop 2020
The sinister, otherworldly, human-like creature is brought out by the various textures and the anxious quality of the brush strokes. There is an eerie aura to her created using a blue palette for her skin tone.

Vanessa Shalaby 2

Vanessa Shalaby
“Royal Maiden”
Digital painting in Adobe Photoshop 2020
The softness of the subject is brought to light by the softness and transparency of the brushstroke as well as the bright glow of the blue lotus against the dark background, lending to the idea of a delicate femininity and elegance.

Vanessa Shalaby 3

Vanessa Shalaby
“The American Dreamgirl”
Digital painting in Adobe Photoshop 2020
The Women’s Suffrage era was one of struggle and resistance, but in this piece, the American Dreamgirl stands proudly as a symbol of patriotism. With fireworks behind her head and a pondering expression on her face, she remains dignified and empowered.

Vanessa Shalaby 4

Vanessa Shalaby
“Roses are Ruby”
Digital painting in Adobe Photoshop 2020
The troubled, horned woman playing a lighthearted tune on the guitar seemed like a contradiction to me, so I decided to take it a step further. More contrast is created by adding injury to her body with the cut on her chest and a dark redness in her eyes, but the color scheme is rather peachy and the style intentionally flattened to play into the air of lightheartedness.
