The sound art collective, Ultra-red has engaged communities for twenty years as artists, organizers, and social researchers. Ultra-red’s strategies focus on what and how we hear and are heard. We invite members of the community as active social agents to join in a dynamic series of events of participatory political listening and conversation.

In 2013 Ultra-red began an artist fellowship with SPARC at UC Santa Cruz, which has resulted in several public exhibitions, numerous public talks and classroom visits, and culminates with this symposium. "Against Participation" brings members of Ultra-red from multiple continents together with members of UCSC communities to investigate listening as a political activity and to interrogate the stakes of participation in neoliberalism.

This event made possible by the generous support of Porter College, the Arts Dean's Fund for Excellence, and the Science and Justice Research Center.
