Hosted by The E.A.R.T.H. Lab, in collaboration with the UCSC Arts Research Institute, Playing with Fire will explore the complex relationships between social, environmental, and physical fires. In this free event, participants examine how fire intersects with environmental justice, food systems, global economy, racial justice, gender, and sexuality. It will also explore local issues in Santa Cruz and California. This "intersectional environmentalism" event brings together the arts, sciences, and social sciences. Our driving question is, How can we have better relations with fire? Living in a state vulnerable to prolonged and unprecedented fire risks, engagement with this issue is essential for Californians wishing to build a thriving and sustainable culture. The symposium will take place at UCSC's Digital Arts Research Center and will be filmed as part of my new 70-minute film, Playing with Fire.
