When We Meet - STELLA BROWN

The way that I experience and interpret the world is through intimate moments. They are moments that are so vibrant and full, that I can freeze them and walk around in them forever. I have found that displays of intimacy are woven throughout all aspects of my life. As I have followed these moments like stepping stones, I have come to see intimacy itself as a bridge. It shows itself clearly at intersections between people, and thoughts, and concepts and anything, it always looks a bit different.

Intimacy is present when we meet in a moment.

These art pieces are windows into my life through memories, experiences and interactions with intimacy. I choose to share these moments of vulnerability with you, if you choose to observe them, you may feel an intimate moment for yourself.

Through various art forms, I have taken a closer look at these moments when intimacy seems to be particularly apparent in order to create a map. As photos are morphed, they become layered and abstracted. A feeling left to linger in between is intimacy, which strings the pieces together.

I have chosen the medium of photography to carry this concept because with my camera, I am able to absorb a fleeting feeling with a snapshot. To physically interact and connect with the medium further, I collaged various photographs together to create a layered photo negative which I exposed onto scraps of cyanotype dyed fabric. After washing and drying, I sewed them back together again into a large tapestry. As aspects of pieces were layered, the collaboration of mediums again created intimate connection. In its whole form, the piece is meant to be a feeling made up of intersections of feelings.

A tapestry made from reflecting on collaged moments, baking them in the sun, hanging them to dry and weaving them back into a new whole.

The process of making each individual element was intimate, vulnerable and spotlight. The photo series and tapestry are accompanied by handwritten journal entries of my own encounters with intimacy in many forms.
