VIRTUAL SENIOR SHOW: Nina McCue - Perceptions

“Every act of perception is to some degree an act of creation, and every act of memory is to some degree an act of imagination” -Gerald M. Edelman.

Perception is our one connection to the world. Our senses take in information and ground us in our surroundings. No one is naturally inclined to doubt their own perceptions. We experienced it, so it must be true. Though everything we perceive is passed through our own mind’s filter. Our past experiences, our motivations and beliefs about the world, all define how and what we experience throughout our lives. Everyone is viewing the world through their own veil. I find this fascinating because it means we are all, to some degree, constructing our own realities.

In this collection of photos I aimed to create a visual veil between the viewer and the subject. Through variations in light, reflection, and blur, I wanted to obscure information from the viewer. This allows the audience the opportunity to fill in the blanks with their own imagination. For me, photography has always been my way of gathering information about the world. It helps me process my surroundings and orient myself in my environment and experiences. My ultimate goal through these photos was to reveal a window into my own perceptions of the world, while leaving room for alternative interpretations.
