“Sticks and stones”
Graphite on paper
This was a still life of organic objects I found while being outside.
“Gabby Studying”
Graphite on paper
This was a combination of reductive value and contour gesture drawing. I wanted to improve my reductive value techniques while pairing it with a technique I already feel confident in, which would be contour gesture.

“Self Portrait”
Charcoal on Paper
This is me, drawn by myself, from memory.
“Augmented Reality”
Lead Pencil on Paper
My take on augmented reality - the camera phone sees something that the viewer does not. Use of contour lines, planar analysis, linear perspective, and shading to create this masterpiece. :)

“Living Room”
graphite pencils (2H-6B)
This drawing is for unit 2 assignment “Measuring Plant”. I finished this drawing by using Blocking in, Negative Shape, Implied line and Line Extension also evidence of Sighting and Measuring.
“The Magic Factory”
Graphite
This drawing is from unit 4. I mostly used cubes and cylinders to complete the drawing. I also add shadows to make the drawing more three dimensional.
“The Full Moon”
Graphite and charcoal
This drawing is from unit 5, I listed out all the concepts we learned from the past few weeks, and I think out of all these concepts I did the best on reductive value and blocking in as my weakness. Therefore, I decided to put these two concepts together as a drawing by using reductive value to draw the background which is the night sky and the moon, and then I use blocking in to draw my two buildings.
“Downtown Santa Cruz”
Graphite
I finished this drawing on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and I used a one point perspective to finish this drawing. At the same time I also add in the positive and Negative from what we learned before.
Joey Longo
“Living Room Plants”
Graphite on Paper

‘Anti-McRavenism’
Sketchbook and 4B sketching pencils
I used gesture lines in this sketch which captures my perspective of the essence of the order and chaos of daily UCSC undergraduate student life. The hardness and messiness of the gesture lines, which resemble bed sheets, demonstrate the chaos present in the immediate environment of each student. Yet, the structured gesture lines of the pillows demonstrate the desire for structure, which resides in the individual’s intention to pursue a higher understanding of chaos or of the general purpose of chaos.
‘Live Oak Sapling’
Sketchbook, 2B sketching pencil and a wooden chopstick
For this sketch, I zoomed in and selected a tightly cropped composition to capture the positive and negative space of my subject matter. I referenced the positive shapes of the oak sapling to draw the silhouette of the leaves and I also incorporated the shadows and negative space to capture the idiosyncratic details of the oak sapling.
‘Mikaels’ Reductive Self-Portrait’
Strathmore sketching paper, charcoal, kneeled and block eraser, chamois cloth
Initially, I used gesture lines to capture geometric shapes and capture the overall planar analysis. I used the kneaded eraser and the regular block eraser to help demonstrate the different value of the shades and also the angle of the light.
‘Gourmet Burger Composition Remix’
Strathmore sketching paper, printer paper, charcoal, exacto knife, scissors, glue
I wanted to dramatize the burger, so I traced various surface textures and patterns prior to starting my collage. Then I did a rough sketch study of my ‘American Gourmet & Kosher’ dramatic dinner drawing, where I identified the different contrasts and various aspects of the drawing. Later, I began assembling my collage technique by selecting shades and textures from my shaded patterns that matched or emphasized the shades and textures of my ‘American Gourmet & Kosher’ drawing.

Charcoal
This is a still life of assorted items I found in my kitchen. It is meant to look unappealing but still show effective use of value and composition.
“Bong, Shoe, and Dinosaur”

“Unrealistic Dinner”
Charcoal on Paper
Because I'm currently in Romania, I've been thinking about my parents, who grew up in a communist regime and had to wait hours for a loaf of bread. I asked my mother, "what is something you never ate until you turned 18?" She then enumerated the current contents of my drawing.
