Becky Diaz, Futuristic Art Department , Graphite, Pencil on Paper, 18 X 24”, 2022

This drawing was meant to capture what I think the Art department would look like in 30 years from now. I was exploring a two-point linear perspective and the illusion of 3D art. I use cast shadows and gradient shadows to explore my creativity of the future.

Becky Diaz, Light, Black and Red Rembrandt Pencil on Grey Paper, 24 X 18” 2022

I called this “light” because I was drawing outside on a very sunny bright day. It was difficult to see where I can draw shadows; so I decided to draw from a white charcoal first to guide me where to add the rest of the shading.

Becky Diaz, Foggy Forest, Charcoal and Ink on Paper, 18 X 24”, 2022

This is a drawing from our beautiful campus as UCSC. I was able to capture a foggy day. I used charcoal for this piece since I was seeing a lot of cast shadows and minimal sources of light. I made sure I was able to deliver high contrast and brightness to this drawing.

Becky Diaz, Skinny Legs, Vine Charcoal on Paper, 18 X 24”, 2022

This drawing was one of my first pieces, we were out in the woods. It was hard to observe a drawing in daylight, but what kept me guided were these long tall skinny branches that were in front of me. It helped me guide how far of a distance I wanted each tree placed.

“UAW Protests”

Graphite on Paper

This quick series of drawings was produced in the wake of the UAW protests. I wanted to both capture the urgency of the protests as well as discover a new sketching style.

Everett Malolot 2

“Sand Harbor”

Graphite on paper

Made for a poster study assignment, I wanted to choose a spot from home (Lake Tahoe) that offered a good range of values while also having high contrast to make things a little easier.

Everett Malolot 3

“Vicimus”

Mixed media

I lovingly named this piece after the song by Slippy of the same name, having had it on loop while working. “Vicimus” was created for a figure composite assignment, and I wanted to capture a gloomy yet calm atmosphere in an invented construction site.

Everett Malolot 4

“Pumpkin Shopping”

Graphite on paper

Made for a perspective drawing assignment. I wanted to catch a calm, yet eerie atmosphere with this and push my limits with laying down value information.

Tree Study - graphite on paper - 18x24

Katie Lyne Kravitz

In this series of pieces, I examine the structural integrity of organic forms, focusing primarily on trees. Studying the knobs and joints of trunks and their limbs with a closer eye and constructional awareness, has strengthened my understanding of the inherent movement exuded by these seemingly still giants. The process is tedious in the most rewarding sense. One that is inorganic in its drawing technique approach and yet provides such a dynamic and lively form when executed. In addition to these studies I apply this form of markmaking that bridges across most of my work, energizing lines with different weights and cross-hatching.

“Oak Tree Opening”

Color Pencil on Off-White Paper

This drawing comes from a structural drawing study done from observation. Stylized to exude the atmosphere of the tree and twisting nature of its trunk. The wrapping lines focus in on and oddity of the tree’s character, focused on the strange gap in the center of its base that provides an orifice in its strong foundation.

Katie Lyne Kravitz 2

“Apple Tree”

Mixed Media on Textured Paper (Watercolor, Color Pencil and Brown Ink)

The first of this three part series of tree drawings depicts different special spots centering around different trees in my hometown. The textured paper has a fabric like feel to it, and its transparency embeds the various materials into its crinkly texture the way the memory of these spaces imprints itself on my mind.

Katie Lyne Kravitz 3

“Lone Tree”

Mixed Media on Textured Paper (Watercolor, Color Pencil and Brown Ink)

The second image of this series zooms out on the central focus, taking a more distant look at the subject. For the different trees in each image, the perspective of each subject reflects the relationship held with the memory of each tree.

Katie Lyne Kravitz 4

“Laurel Tree”
Mixed Media on Textured Paper (Watercolor, Color Pencil and Brown Ink)

The third and final image takes on the textural qualities of the materials interacting with one another. I found that layering watercolor over color pencil creates a variance of values that elicit textures of filtered light through leaves.
